If you’re going to Croatia, walking the Walls of Dubrovnik is an experience that you must have. Introduction to the Walls of Dubrovnik

The towering Walls of Dubrovnik, rising above the Adriatic Sea waters, embody the spirit of Dubrovnik, claiming the second position after London’s Tower of London. The huge fortifications have shielded Dubrovnik for years, which is one of the most well-preserved fortifications in Europe. There is a wall surrounding most of the Old Town which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This gives the traveller a chance to walk inside history and enjoy spectacular views.
When I went to climbing, climbing the walls just after sunrise was one of the most memorable things I did. The sea sparkled on one side, while Dubrovnik’s Old Town’s orange rooftops smiled on the other. From somewhere back in the century, I had found my way into. It doesn’t matter if you’re a history lover, a photography buff or just looking for the best views in town, walking the Walls of Dubrovnik is a must-do Croatia itinerary experience.
The History of Dubrovnik City Walls
The tale of the Dubrovnik City Walls is all about resilience, strength and clever tactics. The history of the forts goes back to the 8th century. However, the walls of forts we see today were built mainly from the 12th to 17th centuries. Over time, upgrades to this early defensive structure led to one of the most remarkable and well-preserved medieval fortification systems in the world.
The walls stretch for almost 2 km (1.2 miles), providing protection around the heart of Dubrovnik. The access gates, towers and bastions were built in a most scientific way in the fortification of city thus speaking of superior military engineering. The reason for climbing these walls is to get a scenic view, but what we will actually be seeing is how the city-state, small as it was, defended itself against the empires and invaders.
The walls surviving to this day have suffered through many an onslaught, including the siege of Dubrovnik in 1991 during the Croatian War. Even with heavy artillery fire, the fortifications held strong. The fortifications staring at us in the city.
Some highlights along the wall include the highest point of the fortification, Minčeta Tower, and Bokar Fortress which served a vital purpose to protect the coast. Today, while roaming the outskirts of the city, the sites also take advantage of the view of the horizon and of the past..
How to Visit The Walls of Dubrovnik
Exploring Dubrovnik’s walls is without a doubt one of Croatia’s memorable experiences. However, when you go — and how — certainly matters. Here’s everything you need to plan your visit smoothly.
Opening Times
Visitors can access the city walls every day of the year but with seasonal hours. From April to October, you can visit the walls from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. From November to March when it is quieter, opening hours are reduced to 9 AM – 3 PM. The visit timing might change due to bad weather or local events. Check the site of the Dubrovnik City Walls before your visit.
Travel Tip: I started walking on the walls as soon as they opened and it was magical! The sun was shining over the rooftops. The crowds hadn’t arrived yet and I had long stretches of the walls to myself. If you’re looking to find peace, snap some photos, or just experience something more intimate, get there early.

Visitors have to buy an entry ticket to enter the Dubrovnik Walls. As of now, adult tickets cost 200 HRK (around $30 USD). Students, children and groups can receive a discount, while a resident of Dubrovnik may be eligible for free/reduced entry. The main entrances sell tickets, but it’s generally faster and easier to buy them at the official site or combine it with a Dubrovnik Pass for access to many of the cities’ historical sites.

“You must try it even though it costs a fortune, since you will be directly supporting the restoration process. You must tell yourself you are supporting the restoration effort. Arrive early because the crowds start pouring in later. The panorama is breathtaking because we understood Dubrovnik’s loveliness only from this location. We obtained authentic knowledge about the historical period. Many stairs exist while visitors need strong abilities but multiple resting areas are available. The cost is worthwhile because you should definitely do it.”

How Long to Walk The Walls
Strolling the whole span of the Dubrovnik City Walls is a great way to get your steps in. Depending on the time of day, the number of people climbing the fort, and your ability, it takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the 2-kilometre (1.2-mile) loop.
Bear in mind that the way involves a lot of stairs and some steep climbs so that you must have some comfortable walking shoes, sun protection and water as these will be essential especially when it gets hot.
Traveler’s Tip: I am a photography lover and I enjoyed the complete walk. One of the most impressive viewpoints around the walls is from Minčeta Tower, the highest point on the wall. You can have a superb view of the 360-degree surrounding Old Town Dubrovnik with its pebble roofs and the Adriatic Sea beyond. If you want the best lighting and the least number of crowds, I suggest you visit either in the early morning or at sunset.
Things to Do Around the Walls of Dubrovnik
Though the city’s main attraction, the Walls of Dubrovnik, are certainly a treat to behold, you’ll also find plenty of other memorable things to see and do in the area. After your walk, don’t run away! There is a lot to see beyond the stones.
Wander Through Dubrovnik’s Old Town

- Old Town Dubrovnik is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is renowned for the Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture that many countries don’t have. The cobbled streets have centuries-old churches, palaces and inviting alleyways. Don’t forget to do Stradun, the main promenade in the city, for people watching and grabbing a coffee while browsing the small shops. I can say that if you walk through the lanes aimlessly like me you will notice the magic is in the small things! From laundry dancing in the air hanging between the stone buildings to the little hidden courtyards and the smell of freshly baked bread wafting from the corner bakery..
Visit Fort Lovrijenac (St. Lawrence Fortress)

- Fort Lovrijenac is just outside the western walls. This fort, built on the cliff, is often dubbed the “Gibraltar of Dubrovnik.” It once defended against attacks from sea and land. And, it offers great views of the Adriatic and the city walls from a different angle.
Personal Tip: After the city walls. I went to the Fort Lovrijenac directly, and this was a great follow-up. The views from here are unparalleled and are far less busy than the walls. This makes for an ideal spot for quiet reflection or photos.
Take a Boat Tour Along the City Walls
- Go on a boat tour for a unique perspective of Dubrovnik. Taking a ride on the water gives you cool views of the city walls, which offer a whole other perspective on the buildings and their scale. Those tours often stop at other beaches too or you can also snorkel or swim around the Lokrum Island coast or Betina Cave Beach. Looking at Dubrovnik from the sea made me realise how well the city merges with nature; fortified, yet free.
